A variety of commitments including work, national chess competitions, new father's duties (Congrats to Mr and Mrs Dawkins!), and dodgy memory meant the Wiltshire Challenge Cup was reduced to only nine competitors this year.
In the senior competition the early round produced no shocks. The four top seeded players present progressed to the semi final although Matthew Wall took Malcolm Bosomworth to extra time before losing by the only goal. In the semis Panos brushed aside Tony Wall with a 2-0 victory whilst in the other game Cyril Mitchener and Malcolm Bosomworth ground out yet another goalless draw, after extra time. In the resulting shoot out Malcolm triumphed 4-3 in a high scoring contest.
The final produced a tight game with Malcolm triumphing over Panos by the only game of the game in the second half with a shot under the goalkeeper on the move from short range.
In the junior events, Matthew Wall beat John Burns to take the 'double' of the Junior Championship and the Youth Challenge Cup. However, Matthew did not have it all his own way coming back from a goal down and only finally winning 3-1 on shots after the game finished even at the end of extra time.
Chris Wall claimed the Junior Challenge Cup by beating Martin Scott in the fial by the only goal of the game.
