Congratulations to Laurie Easton of Essex who beat Marcus Tilgner from Germany 1-0 in the final of the annual Cornwall Invitation Table Soccer Championships in St Agnes.  A field of seventeen players contested the competition which ran, as always, like clock work under the close supervision of co-organisers Geoffrey Luke and Phil Holmes.

 

 

 

A controversial moment from the final...

In a desperate attempt to clear the ball Easton fires towards his own goal and escapes.

Easton claimed his first Championship in beating his German opponent who had bagged the trophy in 1999.

 

Laurie scored his goal after a replayed move meant that Marcus lost a blocking flick.  There followed a period of relentless pressure on the Essex man's goal that culminated in a bizarre incident where Laurie fired the ball towards his own goal to escape Marcus' pressure.  The ball cannoned of the keeper and into Laurie's forearm.  Despite appeals for handball, referee Jeff Parsons ruled that it was not a penalty.

Easton had reached the final with tight quarter and semi finals where he had to beat opponents Simon Goodman and Kevin Dyson on 'shots' following two scoreless draws.

 

Tilgner, in contrast, won both his games en route to the final in normal time - beating Colin Fletcher in the quarters and English and Berlin Champion Jeff Jordan in the semis (both by the only goal).

In the Plate competition, Jeremy Bradley convincingly beat Terry Edge 5-0 in the final.

 

This was yet again another superbly organised competition and is part of a whole long-weekend of activites ranging from rambles to golf tournaments (not to mention the evening 'cocktail' parties at the Driftwood Spars!).

 

Geoffrey and Phil are to be congratulated on their organisational abilities and I am sure everyone that took part wil be looking forward to next years festivities (on Sunday 8th August 2004).
